South Korea, US, and Japan to Conduct First Joint Aerial Drill

South Korea, the United States, and Japan are set to hold a historic joint aerial exercise near the Korean peninsula. This marks the first time the three countries have come together for such a drill.

According to reports, the exercise is expected to take place on Sunday, with the specific locations currently being coordinated. The South Korean government source, as cited by the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper, stated that the three countries are likely to conduct the drill as planned.

The drill is rumored to involve the participation of the U.S. B-52 strategic bomber, along with fighter jets from each country. However, a South Korean defense ministry official declined to comment on the details of the exercise.

Since their leaders’ agreement in August at the Camp David summit to enhance cooperation against North Korea’s threats, the three countries have been expanding their joint military exercises. This joint aerial drill serves as the latest effort to strengthen ties in the face of growing tensions with North Korea and China’s influence in the region.

General Kim Seung-kyum, Chair of South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, revealed during a parliamentary hearing last week that plans were underway for joint aerial drills among the three countries.

In another display of trilateral security cooperation, South Korea, the United States, and Japan have successfully established a three-way communications hotline, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
