Mexico’s Sheinbaum Holds Commanding Lead in Presidency Race – Polls
Former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Leading Presidential Candidate
Former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum is emerging as a frontrunner in Mexico’s upcoming presidential election, according to recent opinion polls. Sheinbaum, the candidate of the ruling leftist National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), has garnered significant support from voters, putting her ahead of her closest rival.
Survey Highlights Sheinbaum’s Strong Position
A recent survey conducted by polling firm Parametria revealed that Sheinbaum enjoys the backing of over half of the electorate in two hypothetical match-ups against potential rivals. In one scenario, Sheinbaum secured 55% support, while Xochitl Galvez, the candidate of the main right-left opposition alliance, garnered 20% support.
Ebrard and Galvez Lagging Behind
Another possible contender, ex-foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard, who finished second to Sheinbaum in the MORENA candidacy race, has not made a decision on his political future. In the survey, Ebrard garnered only 12% support. If either Sheinbaum or Galvez wins the election, Mexico will witness its first female president.
Sheinbaum’s Strong Backing and Promising Prospects
Claudia Sheinbaum, 61, enjoys the unwavering support of popular President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. As the incumbent president is restricted to a single term, Sheinbaum’s alignment with Lopez Obrador positions her as a strong candidate for the presidency. In a separate match-up against Samuel Garcia, governor of northern Nuevo Leon state, Sheinbaum was seen winning 60% support, with Galvez trailing at 17%.
High Recognition and Favorability
Sheinbaum’s prominence is evident, with 69% of voters recognizing her, compared to 51% for Galvez. This recognition, coupled with her favorable ratings, has placed Sheinbaum in a promising position for the upcoming election.
Survey Methodology and Results
The survey conducted by Parametria involved 800 voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. Another survey by polling firm Consulta Mitofsky, which included 1,600 voters, showed Sheinbaum with 47.7% support, Galvez with 27%, and Garcia with 9.7%.
As the race for Mexico’s presidency heats up, Claudia Sheinbaum’s commanding lead in the polls positions her as a strong contender. With her significant support and recognition among voters, she has the potential to make history as Mexico’s first female president.
