Arab Neighbors React to Calls for Humanitarian Corridor for Palestinians
Amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, there have been calls for a humanitarian corridor or escape route for Palestinians in Gaza. However, Arab neighbors such as Egypt and Jordan have strongly opposed any forced displacement of Palestinians from their land. These Arab nations fear that this conflict could lead to permanent displacement, reminiscent of the “Nakba” in 1948 when many Palestinians were forced to flee their homes.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi emphasized the importance of Palestinians remaining steadfast on their land, stating that it is a cause that resonates with all Arabs. Similarly, Jordan’s King Abdullah warned against any attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians and called for preventing the crisis from spilling over into neighboring countries.
The Arab League’s head, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, urgently appealed to the UN Secretary-General to condemn Israel’s alleged effort to transfer the population. The United States has also been discussing the idea of safe passage for Gaza civilians with Israel and Egypt.
Israel’s recent bombardment of Gaza has led to hundreds of thousands of residents fleeing their homes within the small strip of land. The Israeli military’s warning for civilians in Gaza City to relocate south within 24 hours has raised concerns of a potential land invasion.
Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza, has played a role in maintaining a blockade of the strip since Hamas took control in 2007. This blockade has limited the movement of goods and people through the Rafah crossing. Egypt has expressed its efforts to deliver humanitarian relief into Gaza, but Israeli bombardments near the border have hindered these efforts.
The conflict in Gaza has sparked fears in Jordan, home to a large population of Palestinian refugees, that it could lead to a wider conflagration and the expulsion of Palestinians from the West Bank. After an emergency Arab League meeting, Jordan’s Foreign Minister emphasized that all Arab states are united in confronting any attempt to displace Palestinians from their homeland.
