North Korea and China Strengthen Ties in High-Level Beijing Talks
Enhancing Bilateral Relations
North Korean and Chinese officials recently met in Beijing, pledging to further enhance their bilateral ties. This move comes as North Korea aims to broaden its diplomatic engagement following the disruptions caused by COVID-19 lockdowns.
Commitment to Friendship
During the meeting, Wang Huning, China’s fourth-ranked leader, reassured Kim Song Nam, head of North Korea’s International Department, of the unwavering friendship between the two nations. Wang emphasized that the China-DPRK friendship is a strategic choice that will endure despite changing international circumstances.
Continued Diplomatic Engagement
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping have exchanged messages earlier this year, reaffirming their commitment to closer ties. Wang conveyed Xi’s heartfelt message to Kim during their recent meeting, underscoring the importance of their relationship.
Post-Pandemic Reconnection
North Korea imposed strict border restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, disrupting trade and diplomatic exchanges with China and Russia. However, recent developments indicate a gradual reconnection, with increased access for foreign diplomats and heightened engagement with neighboring countries.
Strengthening Bonds
KCNA reported that Kim also held talks with Cai Qi, the head of the powerful Secretariat of the Communist Party of China, further solidifying the strong ties between the two nations. The meeting emphasized the enduring nature of their friendship and the promising future under the strategic guidance of their leaders.
Building Political Connections
In addition to high-level meetings, Kim Song Nam engaged with Liu Jianchao, who oversees foreign political party relations within the Chinese Communist Party. These interactions aim to strengthen political connections and foster closer cooperation between North Korea and China.
