The devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck northwest Afghanistan has prompted the United Nations and several countries to pledge aid to the affected region. With a death toll exceeding 2,000, the international community is stepping up to support Afghanistan in this time of crisis.

UN Allocates Emergency Funds

The United Nations has approved a $5 million emergency reserve allocation from the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund (AHF). The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) will swiftly process the allocation, ensuring eligible partners can utilize their grants starting from October 9. Additional donor resources will determine the final amount of AHF allocations. Furthermore, the UN partners will develop an emergency appeal as part of the existing 2023 humanitarian response plan.

Pakistan, Iran, and China Provide Aid

Pakistan, Iran, and China have also pledged assistance to Afghanistan. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar confirmed the dispatch of medical teams, field hospitals, tents, blankets, and other relief goods as requested by Kabul. Iran’s Foreign Minister Amir Abdullahian expressed readiness to cooperate with Afghanistan, promising humanitarian aid. The Chinese Red Cross Society pledged $200,000 in aid to the Afghan Red Crescent.

Turkey Ready to Support Recovery Efforts

Turkey’s foreign office announced its readiness to provide support for recovery efforts in the affected areas. Their assistance will contribute to the ongoing recovery and rehabilitation of the affected regions in Afghanistan.
