According to the Pentagon’s annual report on China’s military, this number is expected to surpass 1,000 warheads by 2030. In comparison, the previous report estimated China’s operational nuclear warheads to be over 400 in 2021.

The report highlights China’s progress in constructing three new silo fields, likely completed in 2022. These silos are believed to house at least 300 new intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). While China’s global military footprint is still smaller compared to the United States, it continues to expand. The report suggests that China has considered establishing military logistics facilities in various countries, including Burma, Thailand, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Nigeria, Namibia, Mozambique, Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Tajikistan.
Rapid Growth of China’s Navy
China boasts the world’s largest navy, and its fleet is continuously growing. The report reveals that China currently has more than 370 ships and submarines, a significant increase from the 340 reported the previous year. Projections estimate that by 2025, the number of ships will rise to 395, and by 2030, it will reach 435.
Unlikely Requests for U.S. Assistance
Despite the strained relationship between the two nations, there have been instances where China sought U.S. military assistance. For instance, in April 2023, the Chinese military requested help in evacuating Chinese diplomats from Khartoum, Sudan. The U.S. military provided evacuation routes, demonstrating cooperation in unexpected circumstances.
