Huawei Sells 1.6 Million Mate 60 Pro Handsets in Six Weeks

Huawei Beats Smartphone Slowdown with Strong Demand for Mate 60 Pro

In a surprising turn of events, Huawei Technologies has sold an impressive 1.6 million units of its Mate 60 Pro handsets within a span of just six weeks. This remarkable achievement highlights the Chinese technology giant’s ability to defy the smartphone slowdown and enjoy a resurgence in demand for its high-end smartphones.

Record-breaking Sales Despite Competition from Apple

Interestingly, over 400,000 units of the Mate 60 Pro were sold in the past two weeks, coinciding with the launch of Apple’s iPhone 15 in the Chinese market. Counterpoint Research, a renowned research firm, confirmed these figures. They also revealed that in the first 17 days, iPhone 15 sales experienced a slight decline of 4.5% compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 14. However, specific figures were not provided by Counterpoint.

Huawei’s Breakthrough in the Face of Sanctions

Huawei’s success can be attributed to its surprise launch of the premium Mate 60 Pro phone in late August. Analysts believe this device, equipped with a domestically made chip, signifies a significant breakthrough for Huawei in the face of long-standing U.S. technology sanctions. The popularity of the Mate 60 Pro is evident, with stocks quickly depleted upon arrival, creating an illusion of perpetual unavailability, as highlighted by Counterpoint senior analyst Ivan Lam.

Growing Against the Tide in the Smartphone Market

While major smartphone brands experienced subdued demand, resulting in an 8% contraction in the global smartphone market, Huawei, along with its former unit Honor and Transsion Group, managed to buck the trend and achieve year-on-year growth. These brands were the exceptions in an otherwise challenging landscape.

Steady Smartphone Shipments in China

Despite the overall market challenges, smartphone shipments in China remained relatively stable in August, with a marginal year-on-year increase of 0.03% to reach 18.99 million handsets. This data, reported by the China Academy of Information and Communications (CAICT), further emphasizes Huawei’s impressive feat in a highly competitive market.
