France Proposes UN Resolution for Gaza Ceasefire and Palestinian Aid
France’s Initiative at the UN
France presented a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council aiming to explore options for potential UN oversight of a ceasefire in Gaza. The proposal also seeks to support the Palestinian Authority in assuming its responsibilities.
Ambitious Project
Nicolas de Riviere, the French Ambassador to the UN, described the resolution as ambitious and acknowledged that it would require time to materialize. The draft text necessitates at least 9 favorable votes and no vetoes from the other permanent council members.
Call for Ceasefire and Hostage Release
The draft resolution urges an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and demands the prompt and unconditional release of all hostages in Hamas’s custody. The United States abstained from a similar vote last month, which has yet to be implemented by the conflicting parties.
Conflict Background
The conflict erupted when Hamas militants attacked Israel, resulting in casualties and the capture of hostages. In retaliation, Israel imposed a blockade on Gaza, followed by a military offensive that has led to significant Palestinian casualties.
Global Concerns and Solutions
Amid the ongoing conflict, there is mounting pressure worldwide to revive negotiations for a two-state solution, envisioning separate Israeli and Palestinian states. The resolution emphasizes the urgent need for decisive measures towards this goal.
Humanitarian Aid and Famine Warning
The resolution also emphasizes the necessity of providing substantial humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza. Concerns have been raised by food security experts about an imminent famine in parts of Gaza due to the widespread displacement and destruction caused by the conflict.
