Foxconn and Nvidia Collaborate to Build AI Data Factories for Self-Driving Cars

Foxconn and Nvidia Join Forces

Taiwan’s Foxconn, known as the world’s largest contract manufacturer, has partnered with Nvidia to develop artificial intelligence (AI) data factories. These facilities will utilize Nvidia chips and software for a range of applications, including self-driving cars. During Foxconn’s annual Tech Day in Taipei, Foxconn Chairman Liu Young-way and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced their collaboration.

An “AI Factory” Concept

At the event, Jensen Huang unveiled a hand-drawn sketch of what the partnership aims to achieve, describing it as an “AI factory.” He explained that this factory would take data input and generate intelligence as an output. Huang emphasized that AI factories would become prevalent across all industries in the future.

End-to-End AI System for Autonomous Electric Vehicles

The collaboration between Nvidia and Foxconn is focused on developing a complete end-to-end AI system for autonomous electric vehicles (EVs). The AI factory will play a crucial role in developing the software for these vehicles. Huang highlighted that as the EV fleet gains real-life experience and collects more data, the AI factory will continuously improve the software and update the entire fleet.

Success of Nvidia and Foxconn

Nvidia’s shares have surged in 2023, tripling the company’s value and reaching a market capitalization of over $1 trillion. The company’s chips are highly sought after for AI applications, contributing to its success. Foxconn, a major supplier for Apple, aims to replicate its achievements in assembling personal computers and smartphones as it ventures into EVs and other applications.

Foxconn’s Transformation into a Platform Solution Company

Foxconn Chairman Liu Young-way expressed the company’s ambition to transform from a manufacturing service company into a platform solution company. Liu mentioned that AI factories would be instrumental in various applications, such as smart cities and smart manufacturing. He concluded by stating that Foxconn now possesses the power to drive the realization of these smart platforms.
