Russian Military Intensifies Attacks on Avdiivka
The eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka is facing relentless assaults from the Russian military, making it impossible for emergency crews to recover the dead from the rubble. This marks the fifth consecutive day of attacks on the town, which lies in the heartland of Donbas, a region that has been invaded by Russia for the past 19 months.

Both Russia and the United States have characterized the recent surge in violence around Avdiivka as a fresh Russian offensive. The intensity of the fighting has also escalated in other sectors of the front, with clashes in the north worsening and mounting losses for Russian forces in the south.
Town Under Siege: Residents Trapped, Rescue Operations Halted
Avdiivka’s top administrative official, Vitaliy Barabash, reported that the attacks have been relentless, including artillery, rocket launchers, mortars, and airstrikes. The situation has forced all rescue operations to halt, leaving people trapped under the rubble of buildings destroyed by shelling and bombings. With no safe escape route, residents are left with the difficult decision of staying or attempting to flee.
Strategic Importance of Avdiivka
Avdiivka, located just 20 km west of the Russian-held town of Donetsk, has become a symbol of resistance. Despite facing attacks since 2014 when Russian-backed separatists captured parts of eastern Ukraine, the town has managed to hold its ground and strengthen its defenses.
Incremental Gains and Russian Regrouping
Ukraine’s counteroffensive, which began four months ago, has made some progress in the east, near the city of Bakhmut, and in the south, where Kyiv aims to reach the Sea of Azov. However, these gains have been slow and incremental. General Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, has reported that Russian forces have regrouped after suffering losses and are now focused on defeating Ukrainian troops and advancing further south.
