Chrysler Recalls Nearly 286,000 Vehicles in the US
Chrysler is recalling almost 286,000 vehicles in the United States due to a manufacturing defect that could lead to the rupture of side curtain airbag inflators, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Friday.
Concerns Over Ruptured Airbag Inflators
The NHTSA warned that the right and left side curtain airbag inflators in the affected vehicles may rupture, causing sharp metal fragments to strike occupants, potentially resulting in injury or even death.
Models Affected by the Recall
The recall will impact specific models of Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 manufactured between 2018 and 2021. Stellantis-owned Chrysler explained that certain vehicles may have been equipped with side airbag inflatable curtain inflators that were exposed to moisture during the manufacturing process, leading to stress corrosion and a risk of rupture.
No Similarities to Previous Takata Airbag Recalls
Chrysler clarified that the inflators in question do not share the same propellant or design as the Takata airbags previously recalled. This distinction aims to reassure consumers about the unique nature of the current issue.
Past Safety Concerns
Stellantis had issued a warning last year to 29,000 owners of 2003 Dodge Ram pickups after a fatal incident involving a Takata airbag inflator. The company advised owners to halt driving their vehicles until necessary repairs were completed to ensure safety.
