A Russian strike on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, tragically resulted in the deaths of six civilians and left 10 others injured. The early morning attack, attributed to drones by Ukraine’s national police, caused extensive damage to residential areas and various buildings.

City Under Siege

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported, “As of this morning, there are 6 dead and 10 wounded as a result of the night strike on Shevchenkivskyi district.” The assault targeted residential areas, impacting nine high-rise buildings, three dormitories, administrative buildings, a shop, a petrol station, a service station, and vehicles. Defensive Measures

Ukraine’s military swiftly responded to the attack, with their air defenses successfully intercepting and destroying 28 out of 32 drones and three out of six missiles launched by Russia. This proactive defense saved many lives and prevented further devastation in the city.

Increased Threats

Kharkiv, located in Ukraine’s northeast, has been a prime target for Russian aggression, with attacks escalating in recent weeks. The city faced another drone attack on Wednesday, claiming four lives and causing severe damage to residential buildings. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s chief of Staff expressed concerns about the heightened risk of future offensives in Kharkiv.

Continued Alerts

Kharkiv regional Governor Oleh Synehubov reported additional strikes on a residential building and a village north of the city. Despite no casualties in these incidents, air raid alerts remained active in Kharkiv and other parts of Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, for several hours following the attacks.
