Stellantis Extends Slowdown at Turin Plant Due to Weak Demand

Stellantis Continues Reduced Operations in Mirafiori Complex

Stellantis will prolong the period of reduced operations at its Mirafiori complex in Italy due to sluggish demand for its fully-electric Fiat 500 small car and Maserati models, as reported by the UILM union on Tuesday. The stoppage, initially set from Feb. 12 to March 30, will now extend until April 20, affecting more than 2,200 workers at the Turin plant.

Impact on Workers and Production

During this period, Mirafiori will operate with only one eight-hour daily shift instead of the usual two, apart from this week when production was halted entirely. Stellantis confirmed this decision, highlighting the challenges posed by the current market conditions and the need to adjust accordingly to sustain operations.

Government Initiatives and Market Response

Italy recently introduced a new 950 million euros plan to promote cleaner vehicles, offering subsidies of up to 13,750 euros for fully-electric car purchases. However, the scheme has not yet taken effect, causing potential buyers to postpone their decisions and affecting the demand for electric vehicles in the market.

Future Outlook and Resilience

As the automotive industry navigates through these challenging times, companies like Stellantis are adapting to the evolving landscape to ensure sustainability and resilience in the face of changing consumer preferences and market dynamics. The extended slowdown at the Turin plant reflects the industry’s efforts to align with shifting demands and embrace a more sustainable future.
