Strong Demand for Xiaomi’s First Electric Sedan Leads to Long Wait Times
Xiaomi’s SU7 Electric Sedan Faces High Demand
China’s Xiaomi is experiencing unprecedented demand for its SU7 electric sedan, with potential buyers facing significant wait times of four to seven months. The company, known for its smartphones and consumer electronics, began accepting orders recently and saw a staggering 88,898 pre-orders within the first 24 hours.
Extended Delivery Times for Popular Models
Deliveries for the standard SU7 model are expected to take 18-21 weeks, priced at 215,900 yuan ($29,870). The SU7 Pro model and the most expensive variant may take even longer, with estimated delivery times ranging from 18-21 weeks to 27-30 weeks, respectively.
Intense Competition in China’s Auto Market
The SU7, bearing similarities to Porsche’s iconic sports car models, enters a fiercely competitive market with over 40 brands vying for consumer attention. Other companies, like Aito and Xpeng, are offering discounts and subsidies to attract buyers, while Chery is providing various incentives for its gasoline-engine vehicles.
Xiaomi’s Strategic Advantage
Despite the challenging market conditions, analysts believe Xiaomi’s deep pockets and expertise in smartphones give it a competitive edge. The company’s focus on smart dashboards, a feature highly valued by Chinese consumers, further strengthens its position in the electric vehicle market.
Special Editions and Immediate Sales
To kick off sales, Xiaomi introduced special “Founder’s Edition” versions of the SU7, which sold out quickly, with the first 5,000 units being snapped up immediately. A second round of sales for the Founder’s Edition is now open, although the exact number of units available remains undisclosed.
