Revised Rules Tightened on U.S. Chip Shipments to China
New Regulations to Limit China’s Access to AI Chips
The Biden administration has rolled out revised rules to restrict China’s access to U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) chips and chipmaking tools. The goal is to impede Beijing’s chipmaking industry due to national security concerns.
Stricter Measures on Chip Shipments to China
The updated regulations, effective as of Thursday, aim to prevent the export of advanced AI chips from companies like Nvidia to China. This move is part of Washington’s efforts to curb Beijing’s technological advancements that could potentially benefit its military capabilities.
Clarifications on Chip Export Restrictions
The new 166-page regulations also specify that limitations on chip shipments to China extend to laptops containing these chips. The Commerce Department, responsible for export controls, intends to keep refining these measures to enhance restrictions on technology exports to China.
