US Coast Guard Reports No Recoverable Oil Sheen off California Coast
Coast Guard Overflight
The U.S. Coast Guard conducted a morning overflight off Huntington Beach, California, and confirmed the absence of any remaining recoverable oil sheen in the area.
Oil Spill Investigation
Following the discovery of a 2.5-mile-long and 0.5-mile-wide oil sheen off the coast, the agency is actively investigating the source of the spill. Tar balls were found along the shoreline in Huntington Beach, with onshore recovery teams working to assess and remove them as necessary.
Current Investigations
As the investigation into the cause of the sheen progresses, the Coast Guard reassures that they do not believe the sheen and a potential spill of produced water from an offshore platform off Huntington Beach are related.
Statement from Amplify Energy
Beta Offshore, a subsidiary of Amplify Energy Corp, reported the incident at Platform Elly off Huntington Beach. Amplify Energy stated that there is currently no indication that the sheen is connected to their operations.
Past Incidents
In 2021, an underwater pipeline leak from the Elly platform to Long Beach resulted in an oil spill off the coast of Huntington Beach. Approximately 588 barrels of oil were leaked during that incident.
